Duties

  • Knowledge of basic principles of forest management, evaluate data collected for accuracy, determine causes of variances, and assess applicability of data to the overall forest management program/project.
  • Provide factual information, seek cooperation from timber operators, users, or visitors, and report problems or violations of regulations related to the use and protection of forests.
  • Operate computers – enter and retrieve information from GIS, forest, and other databases; prepare correspondence from boiler plates; transmit and receive email.
  • Use engineer’s transit, GPS, and other instruments, common hand tools, operate two- and four-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs.
  • Read and prepare simple maps.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Cannot hold an active real estate license; cannot have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.
  • Direct Deposit Required.
  • Appointment subject to a favorably adjudicated background/suitability investigation.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older for hazardous positions.
  • May need a valid state driver’s license, obtained within 30 days of entrance on duty.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: Driver’s License.

For GS‑04: Requires six months generalized experience and six months specialized experience at or equivalent to GS‑03 level, or 2 years above high school with related courses, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

For GS‑05: Requires one year specialized experience at or equivalent to GS‑04 level, or a bachelor’s degree with related courses, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands

Work ranges from sedentary office duties to frequent field work involving walking, riding, stooping, bending, lifting, and occasional ladder or tree climbing.

Work Environment

Office work in lighted, heated, air‑conditioned environment. Field work exposes employee to extreme heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards; may require working at heights.

Education

Additional education requirements correspond to GS levels:

  • GS‑03: 1 year of study incl. at least 6 semester hours in disciplines such as range management, conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, or mathematics.
  • GS‑04: 2 years of study incl. at least 12 semester hours in any of the aforementioned disciplines; no more than 3 semester hours in mathematics.
  • GS‑05: 4‑year bachelor’s degree with major in forestry, range management, agriculture, or related field; or 24 semester hours in related disciplines; no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics.
